American Services In Asia

Martin A. Schell, Founder and CEO

I am an American citizen who has been living in East Asia since 1984. During this time, I have worked in Japan, Thailand, and Indonesia for several years each.

In each country, I resided in ordinary neighborhoods where my daily activities naturally led me to encounter local people from a variety of social and occupational backgrounds. This down-to-earth approach to living overseas enabled me to become intimately acquainted with three different cultures.

By interacting with people whose native languages come from three major linguistic families, I developed a broad understanding of the variations of English usage in Asia. As a result, I became adept at speaking and writing English so that it can be easily understood by people who know it as a foreign language.

Global English is English that is spoken and written for a global audience, which naturally includes many people who are not native speakers of the language.

In May 1998, I founded American Services In Asia in order to promote my global communication skills via the internet. A.S.I.A. initially focused on editing translations. However, as time went on, I found that more and more Asians involved in academia and business were writing their originals in English.

From 2005 to 2010, I worked for NYU's Stern School of Business, teaching writing skills online and on campus.

From 2010 to 2014, I was a subcontractor consulting for Kaiser Associates by providing primary research for a variety of due diligence projects.

My resume is downloadable as a .pdf file.

On another web page, I summarize my background and personal history in Asia.
