Martin A. Schell, Founder and CEO
I am an American citizen who has been living in East Asia since 1984. During this time, I have worked in Japan, Thailand, and Indonesia for several years each.
In each country, I resided in ordinary neighborhoods where my daily activities naturally led me to encounter local people from a variety of social and occupational backgrounds. This down-to-earth approach to living overseas enabled me to become intimately acquainted with three different cultures.
By interacting with people whose native languages come from three major linguistic families, I have developed a broad understanding of the variations of English usage in Asia. As a result, I have become adept at speaking and writing English so that it can be easily understood by people who know it as a foreign language.
A Short History of the Company
In May 1998, I founded American Services In Asia in order to promote my global communication skills via the internet. Because much of my career has involved teaching and writing, A.S.I.A. initially consisted of a single department, which focused on editing translations and other documents. This department was called English Language Consulting Services.
In 1999, I began to offer web site design consulting, primarily focusing on content and usability. Universal Web is the name of the department involved in redesigning web sites for a global audience. Despite the name World Wide Web, many sites lack a global perspective and display content that is difficult for non-native English speakers to understand. It is also common for people in technologically advanced countries to design international web sites that are difficult (or even impossible) to access via a modem, due to complexity, file size, and other logistical considerations
At the beginning of 2000, I renamed the language consulting department Yankee English Services and expanded it to include coaching in global communication skills.
My resume is downloadable as a .pdf file.
On another web page, I summarize my background and personal history in Asia.
